College Course Preparation
1. What courses should I take in High School? If your school offers Honors, AP (Advanced Placement) and Dual Enrollment courses, you should try to take as many of them as your schedule will allow. Your basic course of study should include 4 years of English, Math, and Science (especially if you plan on majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math [STEM]), 3 years of History, 3 years of a Foreign Language, and any other electives of interest.
2. What are Honors courses? Honors courses are a little more difficult than the regular high school courses and also have more weight when calculated in the GPA, thus making your GPA higher.
3. What is an AP course? AP courses are year-long courses, at the end of which there is an exam. The exam is scored on a scale of 1 – 5 and usually, a score of 4 or 5 will be the equivalent of a few credits, depending on the school.
4. What are Dual Enrollment courses? Dual Enrollment courses are taken at your high school, but you can also get college credits from a local school. Those credits can also be used at the school which you decide to attend.
